WriteFest 2016 speakers announced

Creative Regions has released a superb line-up of speakers for this year’s WriteFest, now being held in October (not May) as part of the annual Crush Festival at Bundaberg.

rachael johnsThe committee has done a fabulous job of cobbling together some outstanding authors for this year’s event, including international bestseller Rachael Johns (pictured), Victorian Premier’s Literary Award winner Angela Savage, foodie fashionista Josephine Moon and Indie publishing dynamo Justin Sheedy.

Two other shining stars at this year’s event are HarperCollins Publishers Marketing Communications Head Jaki Arthur and Random House Australia Editor Lex Hirst.

Published and emerging authors, who have completed a full manuscript, have the chance to pitch their MS to Ms Hirst at this year’s WriteFest. More details here while your application can be found here.

I was lucky enough to attend a special marketing workshop with Jaki Arthur in Brisbane two years ago. It was not only unbelievably informative but drenched with enthusiasm. In a world where naysayers and the media constantly bemoan the dark future of writers and publishing, Jaki’s insights and down-to-earth strategies are sunshine-filled days and added silver linings for all authors dedicated to their craft. She certainly converted me.

In Conversation with JL Addicoat

Today I’m welcoming the zesty JL Addicoat to my website to chat about her original debut novel, Spirit of Love. JL and I have been long-time members of the Bundaberg Writers Club and she’s soaring high with her touching romance novels.

Cheryse: What inspired you to start writing? What inspired Spirit of Love?

JL AddicoatJL: I’ve always wanted to write. I’ve been writing my own stories, just for my enjoyment, since I was a teenager. Writing also helped me cope through some of the darker days of my life. In my stories I could escape this terrible world into one of my own making. I have to say, I couldn’t publish them now. Talk about following the fundamental rules. At the time, it didn’t matter. I finally decided to put something on paper after being asked to be a beta reader by a friend. I didn’t even know what one was, but I read her stories, corrected what I thought should be corrected and let her know what I thought. This included words I had never heard of before like ‘laved’. Incidentally, even though I know what it means, I still don’t like the word. What inspired me to write Spirit of Love was a love of old buildings, English Heritage, the TV shows ‘Grand Designs’ and ‘Restoration House’ and a case of thinking, ‘What if.’

Cheryse: The Aussie bush around your hometown is a world away from the Cornish countryside? Why did you choose this location?

JL: I feel pulled toward Cornwall as my ancestors on my father’s side come from St Buryan and St Just. The place is on my bucket list to visit. I love the English countryside and its flora. If it wasn’t for its cold weather, I’d probably be living in Tasmania. I love colourful flowers and trees, but I love the warmth more.

How did you come to write speculative fiction? What attracted you to the genre?

The Paranormal has always interested me and is in my blood. I also love Fantasy as there are very few boundaries and everything is possible. Romance, well romance is everywhere. It doesn’t have to be a full-on sex scene, but can be soft and subtle like a gentle kiss given by the boy next door. I really don’t think any story can be just ‘one’ genre. There always has to be something else to help carry it through.
Spirit of Love_300dpi (1)What do you love most about being published?

The congratulations from others who have trod the same road must come in at number one, also the comments I have received from others saying they like the way I write. Even though I have always loved reading and writing, I never thought that one day I would write something that someone else would pay money to read

Have you ever had any paranormal experiences in your own life?

I have had many paranormal experiences. I have seen my aunt and grandfather after they passed away. I have seen and heard tea parties being held at Werribee Manor. I have watched as the spirit of a young man walked through an office worker and then out of the room through a brick wall.

What has been your most terrifying real-life experience?

My most terrifying experience happened when I was pregnant with my first child and I heard my younger sister calling my name over and over even though I was in Canberra and she was in Townsville. I called my mother who contacted my sister’s school and the headmaster discovered she was missing from class. The teachers searched the grounds and finally found her hidden and badly hurt amongst rocks at the back of the school. ESP does exist and can be used.

Tea or Coffee?
Definite tea. I used to drink coffee, very heavily, but my brain gave me a warning over three days a few years back with a massive migraine. I haven’t had a cup of coffee since.

Cats or dogs?
I am a well trained cat servant. I started my training when I was six years old and haven’t been without a cat for more than six months since – and even during those six months, I took care of a number of semi-tame feral cats at the Cabarlah Army base.

You’re trapped on a desert island. What three things do you wish you came armed with?

My husband Kevin (he’s a must have), a fishing rod and a book, preferably a DIY manual. If I could have a fourth item, it would be Anna Campbell’s ‘Seven nights in a Rogue’s Bed’. Then Kev and I would have something to re-enact in our spare time.

Di’s 16 in 2016

Happy Birthday, Di Wills! What a fabulous day to share your 16 goals for 2016 with the rest of the world. Um, make that the GalaxyCheryse Durrant, Di Wills and Sandy Curtis at WriteFest 2012.. Um, actually the Multiverse.

To let my readers in on the not-so-secret: On January 2, Miss Diabolical (Di, for short) took a road trip with her brother and his girlfriend where she found herself setting a list of new year resolutions which were all about FINISHING projects she’d never finished previously. “I just want to finish a heap of things I’ve started or achieve other things that I’ve always wanted to do but never got around to,” Di said last month.

Here is Di’s 16 in ’16:  callig

  1. Write more
  2. Practise driving a manual car
  3. Outrun the zombies
  4. Get a dog
  5. Make cheese from scratchmake cheese
  6. Write a letter in Calligraphy
  7. Learn to crochet a doily
  8. Learn to shoot a gun (in a controlled environment)
  9. Lose another 10kg
  10. Take up tap dancing (again)
  11. Learn a song on my harmonica
  12. Find the ukulele and play it
  13. Learn to juggle
  14. Finish the baby blanket
  15. Finish two separate diplomas
  16. Go hiking up Mt Walsh

“Each of these projects have their own mini-story and, unfortunately, show how great I am at starting a project, but weak on the long-term execution,” Di said.

“I did the numbers and realised I needed to achieve an average of one goal every three weeks. It’s been almost five weeks and I can’t say with any confidence that I have done any of them. “I’ve been getting in the way of my own goals and feel like I’m behind in my timeline, but here’s the updated list for February:

  1. Write more – booked a screenwriting course in Sydney… No writing but more incentive achieved.
  2. Practise driving a manual car. Nope
  3. Outrun the zombies (it’s a running app on my phone.) Got caught last week.
  4. Get a dog. Nope
  5. Make cheese from scratch. Nope
  6. Write a letter in Calligraphy. Nope
  7. Learn to crochet a doily. Borrowed a book from a friend. So, nope.
  8. Learn to shoot a gun (in a controlled environment). Nope.
  9. Lose another 10 kilos. At 4kg and happy with that so far.
  10. Take up tap dancing (again). I went to my first class! Was so much fun I am building a small tap floor to practice at home. So have steered perfectly good energy into a different direction. WIP definitely.
  11. Learn a song on my harmonica. Nope
  12. Find the ukulele and play it. Found it. Have not played. Nope.

  13. Find juggling balls and learn to juggle. Found balls. Practiced a little. WIP.
  14. Finish baby blanket. Getting really close!!
  15. Finish two separate diplomas. Nope
  16. Go hiking up Mt Walsh. Nope.

“Excuses are for sissies. I will check back in a month and let you know how it’s going. Perhaps Cher can help me keep on track!” Di said.

“Have you got things you have started and not finished? Please pick one and join me and try finishing something you started.
Just be sure to tell Cher so she can keep us all honest!”

Happy Birthday, Di, and good luck with your 16 for 2016. xox
